Kids' Area Rugs: Girls's Rooms Ideas

Area rugs are great for complementing themes, or inserting a theme into an otherwise basic room. An area rug featuring a castle and rainbow can turn a pastel room into a room that inspires dreaming about “Once Upon a Time …”, or a rug featuring a jockey can be the perfect accent in a girl's room that focuses on her love of horses.

Scenes aside, a rug bordered with flowers or dragonflies can add a feminine touch to a room, and there is certainly no law against using a sports-themed area rug to liven up the room of a little girl who loves sports!

Bringing Décor and Function Together

Carpets and rugs are very functional and practical: they provide a soft surface on which kids can play, they provide protection from cold floors, and can help muffle sound. They're also very decorative, grounding the room, providing a neutral backdrop for décor or reinforcing the room's theme, and helping to make a room feel “finished.”

Kid's Room Flooring

Kid's room decorating shouldn't stop with the choice of bedding or wall accents. Remember that your kids spend a lot of time on the floor of their rooms. Be creative when it comes to flooring, but also consider the age of the child. Kid's room décor for a younger child needs to include some floor padding, so stick with carpet or thick throw rugs. An older child might want a painted floor or a novelty rug in faux fur.

When decorating kid's rooms, consider the flooring as part of the entire design scheme. Use color or texture to pull the room together. For example, a princess room would look special with a pink and white tiled floor effect. Set off a jungle-themed room with a bamboo rug.

Comfort, Durability and Safety in Rugs

Children spend a lot of time on the floor, and kids' rugs get a lot of wear.

  • Look for children's rugs made of durable materials, such as wool or strong synthetic fibers, and that have piles that will withstand the abuse that children's feet and toys will occasion.
  • Make sure the rug meets the standards for use with children, and look for rugs that are stain-resistant, and that can be washed either with normal carpet cleaner – or, in the case of area rugs - that can be put in the laundry.
  • For practical purposes, you might want to stick with multi- or darker-colored rugs, which will hide spills and stains better than light rugs.
  • For both comfort and safety, and to extend the life of the rug, use a rug pad. This will make the rug even cushier and will prevent it from slipping, which makes it safer for your child.
  • Finally, if the edges of the rug are loose or flip up, consider anchoring them with double-sided tape to minimize the chances of your child tripping.
