While a flat coat of one color is a great start, you can also use faux paint techniques to give the room a more interesting backdrop. Wide stripes in complementing colors are a fun option, as is ragging and sponging to create a soft combination of colors. Many paint companies these days also make paints that have special finishes, like suede or sand or linen. These can be fun and can contribute to the theme of a room.
